OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI: answers that build calculators, charts and interactive tools
Instead of a wall of text, ChatGPT can now render the format the question actually needs — and OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use the assistant every week.
OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-6 inside ChatGPT worldwide, and the most visible part of the release is not a benchmark chart. It is a new presentation layer OpenAI calls Intelligent UI: when a question suits it, the assistant now answers with charts, calculators, bill splitters, comparison tables, diagrams and even small interactive games built directly into the conversation, instead of plain paragraphs.
Paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise — began receiving the update on October 7, 2026, with Free and Go users following on October 8. OpenAI, which says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, is pushing the change across the full consumer surface of the product.
What Intelligent UI changes
Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 compose an answer from text, visuals and interactive elements — buttons, forms, charts, diagrams and small generated tools — choosing the format automatically based on what the question needs. In practice that means you can ask for something like a trip budget or a bill splitter and get a working, editable calculator inside your chat, then change inputs or explore part of the explanation without asking a new question for every tweak.
The feature also addresses response latency. GPT-6 can start answering while it continues to think, and for web search queries OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% faster on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. The company also cites improved search performance and safety measures in the same release.
Two model tiers: Sol and Luna
The October release ships two model variants. GPT-6 Sol serves Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, while GPT-6 Luna serves Free and Go users. Both support Intelligent UI. This follows the earlier DevDay 2026 release of GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, which targeted agentic coding, computer use and professional workflows in ChatGPT Work and Codex before the consumer Chat rollout.
GPT-6 Sol: 99.99% instruction-hierarchy robustness and 97.13% indirect prompt-injection robustness. GPT-6 Luna: 99.79% and 95.80% respectively. Both are rated high-capability for cybersecurity and biological/chemical preparedness, with AI self-improvement below high capability.
Why it matters
OpenAI has spent the past year fending off comparisons with rival chat products that increasingly generate app-like responses rather than text-only answers. By shipping GPT-6 and Intelligent UI together, the company is betting that the next phase of the chatbot race will be decided by interface design as much as raw model intelligence. Analysts note the move puts pressure on Google and Anthropic, whose consumer assistants face the same race toward dynamic, interactive answer formats.
The shift is also a practical one for everyday users: tasks that previously required copying text into a spreadsheet app — splitting an invoice, sizing a buffer, comparing plans — can now happen in the chat itself, with the result you can inspect, tweak and export.
Availability and limits
- Plus, Pro and Business (where workspace allows): October 7, on GPT-6 Sol
- Enterprise/EDU: October 7, subject to administrator settings and workspace permissions
- Free and Go: October 8, on GPT-6 Luna
- Intelligent UI supports text, visuals, charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools, but does not replace the standard text answer for every query
- Enterprise deployments retain existing permission controls and admin governance
What this means for you
If you use ChatGPT, expect the answer format to change: routine calculations, comparisons and small data tasks may now arrive as interactive tools rather than paragraphs. Try asking for a working calculator or a comparison table to see the new layer on your tier. Businesses deploying ChatGPT should verify that Intelligent UI respects your workspace and permission policies before the feature becomes part of day-to-day workflows.
GPT-6's headline feature is presentation, not just intelligence: answers can now be working UI. With 1.2 billion weekly users getting it, the interface — not just the model — becomes the battleground.
