Microsoft Unveils Decision-1, a New Thinking Model Built to Make Fast Decisions

A new class of fast, decision-first AI model.

Microsoft did not just ship another chatbot. Announcing Microsoft-Decision-1 this week, the company presented it as a model for fast decision-making and action: a thinking model that evaluates and scores a set of options and recommends a next move or final selection, rather than generating a long free-form answer.

That design points to the real gap in current AI systems. Today's large models are excellent at producing text, but weaker at the part of a task that matters in practice: choosing. Deciding which link to click, which option to select, or which action to take next, and doing it quickly, is a different job than writing a paragraph. Decision-1 is aimed squarely at that job.

A model that scores, not just writes

According to reporting from The Verge and InfoWorld, the model separates decision-making from the generative work that larger language models usually handle. Instead of reasoning through a problem into prose, it weighs candidate choices and outputs a scored recommendation. That format is a better match for agents that need to act, and for applications where the answer is not a text but a choice.

Alongside it, Microsoft's announcement also points to faster, cheaper companion models, including FastTranscribe-25 and a 4K-capable Think in 4K video model. Together they sketch a product strategy: pair reasoning and decision capabilities with cheap, fast transcription and generation so an agent can perceive, decide, and act on the fly.

What this means for you

Watch for decision-style models appearing in agent products. They are the building blocks for AI that picks the next step for you rather than just talking about it. If you build on models, expect a new category of API that returns a choice and a score instead of prose.

  • Decision-1 is positioned as a fast decision-making and action model.
  • It scores options and recommends a next move or final selection.
  • Faster transcription and 4K video models are announced alongside it.
  • The design targets agents that need to act, not just respond.
